Tau Hou hari – Happy New Year: Wishing you a happy, healthy and prosperous new year filled with love, respect and understanding.
Kia Ora (Greetings) Travelers,
Halfway through our season, I got to spend some family time at home before going back on the road again. Summer is well underway with hot dry days and busy with visitors and locals which would make traveling less relaxing hence we focus on later (or earlier) in the seasons for our travels.
We encountered unusual spring weather, with magnificent looking mountains covered in snow. The Lake Wanaka and (most photographed) tree show the full extent. BTW: this photo was taken just 150 yards behind our accommodation. It added an extra dimension to the already spectacular views – only for a few days though.
The newly repaired coastal highway, which was totally destroyed by landslides during the 2016 earthquake near Kaikoura, was open for travel again and the new Ohau lookout point gives us a good impression of the crucial new road as well as the still present seal colony. The job was done in record time (still took a year or so) and achieved an international engineering award.
In November we encountered purely by coincidence at Lake Matheson the release of 26 Kiwi birds by the Department of Conservation. A very special, emotional and important part of the breeding program of this special and protected national bird. Keep in mind that these birds are nocturnal (deep into the forest) and can only be seen at bird sanctuaries in dark enclosures.

“Robert Panzer’s service exceeded our expectations in every aspect. His knowledge and experience were significant contributions for our overall experience, as we were his error-free choices of accommodations and restaurants and his ability to adjust our schedule to avoid the impact of bad weather we occasionally encountered. The materials he provided for each stop along the way were well organized and informative. His personality, sense of humor and choice of socks continually delighted us. We’d recommend Tailored Travel to our friends without hesitation. Thank you!” Margo and Bill
